Guided Hunts

Baranof Backcountry Outfitters contracts with James Phillips Registered Guide #929 owner of Annahootz Alaskan Adventures under his special use permits throught the USFS to offer guided hunts with registered guide, Bae Widmier. Together we offer hunts for Mountain Goat, Brown Bear, Black Bear and Sitka Blacktail Deer on Baranof Island and Prince of Wales Island.

Spring Black Bear Hunt – Prince of Wales Island
This 7-day guided hunt is offered from April 15th to June 15th aboard the M/V Denali. Hunt in one of Alaska’s top black bear habitats using skiffs for coastal spot-and-stalk. The hunt includes meals, non-alcoholic beverages, hunting license, tags, linens, and transport within the area. Trophy prep and shipping assistance provided. Travel begins with a flight into Ketchikan via Alaska Airlines, followed by a small charter flight to Klawock where you will board the M/V Denali. Cost: $11,500. Excludes equipment rental, personal gear, float plane charters, alcoholic beverages, excess baggage fees, and expediter fees.

Spring Brown Bear Hunt – Baranof Island
Based out of Sitka, Alaska, accessible directly via Alaska Airlines, experience a 10-day guided spring brown bear hunt aboard the M/V Denali from May 18 to 27. Target brown bears as the rut begins, with expert guides using spot-and-stalk techniques from skiffs. Includes meals, non-alcoholic beverages, linens, gear, and transport within the hunting area. Trophy prep and shipping assistance provided. Cost: $40,000. Excludes expediter fees, personal gear, float plane charters, alcoholic beverages, and excess baggage fees.

Sitka Black-Tail Deer Hunt
Based out of Sitka, Alaska, with direct flights via Alaska Airlines, enjoy five days of guided hunting for up to two deer in pristine wilderness from August 1 to December 31. Options include boat-based hunts from the M/V Denali, fly-in hunts, or hiking access. The rut in November offers excellent calling opportunities. Includes hunting tags, license, meals, lodging, and transport to the field. Cost: $12,000. Excludes accommodations, baggage fees, trophy shipping, personal gear, alcoholic beverages, excess baggage fees, and expediter fees. Customizable trips available.

Mountain Goat Hunt – Baranof Island
Based out of Sitka, Alaska, with direct access via Alaska Airlines, this challenging 7-day mountain goat hunt runs from August 1 to December 31, with fly-in options August through September. Hunt involves hiking and camping in remote alpine terrain. Includes hunting license, tags, meals, tent, snacks, beverages, and one round-trip chartered flight to the alpine lake. Trophy prep and transport assistance provided. Add a Sitka black-tail deer tag for $2,800. Cost: $20,000. Excludes expediter fees, personal gear, additional float plane charters, alcoholic beverages, and excess baggage fees. Gear and rifle rentals available.

Notes on Hunts

• Please note that Mountain Goat hunting, even if flown into an area, is a very physically demanding and challenging hunt. Clients looking to pursue this hunt should speak with us well in advance of your desired hunt date to ensure proper preparation.

• Both Blacktail Deer and Mountain Goat hunting will involve hiking many miles each day whether based on the M/V Denali or a spike camp.

• Bear hunts are coastal hunts, based on our vessel, the M/V Denali. We will use skiffs to spot and access the coastline area and near coastal fringe.

Note on weather

Weather can, and does, impact hunting. While we can’t promise you weather won’t be a factor (afterall, this is Alaska), we can promise we will do our very best to utilize each and every hunt day.
